After seven years in
the wilderness, the Bengal Tiger -- Sourav Ganguly -- has returned with
a bang and is among the top 20 in the world test rankings. Sourav
Ganguly is ranked at 20th spot with 657 rating points.
Interestingly, this is the first time in 7 years that Sourav Ganguly has
made it into the top 20. The 33-year old earned the 'Man of the Series
Award' after he scored 534 runs in the 3-match Test series against
Pakistan. The series also witnessed Sourav score his highest ever Test
score of 239 runs in the first innings of the 3rd Test at the
Chinnaswamy Stadium.
While, Sachin Tendulkar dropped a rung to 19th. On the bowling front,
India's Test captain Anil Kumble is relishing his time in charge and the
veteran leg-spinner took 18 wickets in the three-Test series to move up
two places to fifth in the bowlers list.
Some important facts:-
-- Sourav Ganguly, for the first time in his career, has amassed 1000
runs in a calendar year - 1023 runs (Avg 63.93) including three
centuries and four fifties in 9 Tests. His previous best year in terms
of run-aggregate was 945 runs at an average of 41.08 in 16 Tests in
2002.
-- Ganguly aggregated 534 runs in the just concluded series at an
average of 89.00 - the second best tally by an Indian batsman in a
three-Test series, next only to Virender Sehwag's tally of 544 (Avg
90.67), including two centuries, against Pakistan in India in 2004-05.
-- Ganguly (239 + 91) became the first batsman to post a double century
and a ninety in the same Test match.
